EMBARGO : Only to be published or disseminated at 1200 hours, Thursday, 11 May 2017 DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS MALAYSIA PRESS RELEASE The Revenue for Services Sector Increased 8.3 per cent or RM375.3 billion in the First Quarter 2017 Introduction This report presents statistics on services sector which encompasses sub-sector of Wholesale & Retail Trade; Information & Communication; Transportation & Storage; Food & Beverages; Professional; Private Health; Private Education; Accommodation; Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Real Estate Agent for the period from first quarter 2012 until first quarter 2017. Principal statistics reported are total revenue/ sales value, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid.

Performance of Services Sector , First Quarter 2017 Performance of Services Sector The revenue of services sector increased 8.3 per cent to RM375.3 billion in the first quarter 2017 as compared with the same quarter 2016. The increase was contributed by Professional and Real Estate Agent (16.7%) and Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (7.7%) segments. The total revenue on quarterly basis increased RM6.6 billion or 1.9 per cent. Total number of persons engaged in this sector was 3.6 million persons, an increase of 88,437 persons or 2.5 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. On quarterly basis, the number of persons engaged rose 15,838 persons (0.4%). In the first quarter 2017, salaries & wages paid was RM22.9 billion, an increase of 5.1 per cent as compared to the previous year and 1.4 per cent quarter-on-quarter. Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation The total revenue for Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment registered a growth of 8.4 per cent (RM298.2 billion) as compared to the same quarter 2016. The increase was driven by Wholesale & Retail Trade (8.5%) sub-sector. This segment recorded an increase of 2.3 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The number of persons engaged in this segment increased 3.1 per cent or 2.7 milion persons as compared to the first quarter 2016. Salaries & wages paid grew 5.1 per cent to RM13.8 billion. Quarter-on-quarter, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid increased 0.5 per cent and 2.0 per cent respectively. Information & Communication and Transport & Storage Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment posted an increase in total revenue to RM55.0 billion or 7.1 per cent as against the same quarter of the preceding year. This increased was propelled by Information & Communication sub-sector (7.9%). However on quarterly basis, the total revenue for this segment registered decrease of 1.1 per cent. Year-on-year, the number of persons engaged for this segment decrease 0.1 per cent to 465,565 persons, whilst salaries & wages paid also grew to RM4.9 billion (3.9%). The number of persons engaged was stagnant while salaries & wages paid decrease 1.1 per cent in the current quarter as compared to the previous quarter.

Health , Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation segment recorded total revenue of RM14.4 billion, an increase of 7.7 per cent compared to RM13.4 billion in first quarter 2016. The growth of this segment was driven by Private Education (8.5%) followed by Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (8.3%) sub-sector. Total revenue of this segment increased 4.2 per cent, quarter-onquarter. The number of persons engaged grew 1.6 per cent to 269,013 persons as compared to the same period in the previous year. Salaries & wages paid also went up 4.9 per cent to RM2.2 billion. On a quarterly basis, the number of persons engaged dropped 0.4 per cent while salaries & wages paid registered a growth of 2.2 per cent. Professional and Real Estate Agent The total revenue for Professional and Real Estate Agent segment rose 16.7 per cent to RM7.8 billion as against the same quarter of previous year. Professional sub-sectors showed an increase of 17.6 per cent. On quarterly basis, this segment increased 12.7 per cent. In the first quarter 2017, the number of persons engaged increased 170,769 persons or 3.5 per cent. Salaries & wages paid grew 3.5 per cent to RM2.0 billion as compared to the same period in the previous year. As compared to the preceding quarter, the number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid rose 2.9 per cent and 3.1 per cent respectively. *Notes: Data for first quarter 2017 is provisional.
