- EMBARGO : Only to be published or disseminated at 1200 hours, Friday, 24 February 2017 DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS MALAYSIA PRESS RELEASE MALAYSIAN ECONOMIC INDICATORS: LEADING, COINCIDENT & LAGGING INDEXES DECEMBER 2016 Highlights The Leading Index (LI) which monitors the economic performance in advance augmented in December 2016. The LI posted a growth of 0.9% to 117.4 points in the current month from 116.4 points in November 2016. This was supported mainly by Number of Housing Units Approved (0.8%), Real Imports of Semi Conductors (0.4%) and Real Imports of Other Basic Precious & Other Non-ferrous Metal (0.4%). The annual change of LI showed an improvement from negative 1.4% in the previous month to negative 0.5% in December 2016.
- The Coincident Index (CI) which measures the current economic activity, rose 0.2% in December 2016. Industrial Production Index (0.2%), Total Employment in Manufacturing Sector (0.1%) and Volume Index of Retail Trade (0.1%) were the components that influenced to the positive growth. The annual change of CI continued to increase to 3.1% in the reference month from 3.0% in November 2016. The annual change of LI and CI showed an improvement in the current month as compared to the previous month. Concurrently, the Diffusion Index for CI reached 83.3%, while the Diffusion Index for LI below 50.0%. This indicates that the economy is expected to continue growing in the months ahead.
