EMBARGO : Only to be published or disseminated at 1200 hours, Friday, 9 February 2018 DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS MALAYSIA PRESS RELEASE Revenue for Services Sector Increased 8.5 per cent or RM399.7 billion in the Fourth Quarter 2017 Introduction This report presents statistics on services sector which encompasses sub-sector of Wholesale & Retail Trade; Information & Communication; Transportation & Storage; Food & Beverages; Professional; Private Health; Private Education; Accommodation; Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Real Estate Agent for the period from first quarter 2012 until fourth quarter 2017.

Performance of Services Sector , Fourth Quarter 2017 Performance of Services Sector Revenue of services sector increased 8.5 per cent to RM399.7 billion in fourth quarter 2017 as compared to the same quarter 2016. The increase was contributed by Professional and Real Estate Agent (14.7%), Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (8.6%) and Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation (8.5%) segments. Total revenue on quarterly basis increased RM12.1 billion or 3.1 per cent. Total number of persons engaged in this sector was 3.6 million persons, an increase of 76,042 persons or 2.1 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. On quarterly basis comparison, number of persons engaged recorded an increasing of 1.1 per cent (39,243 persons). In the fourth quarter 2017, salaries & wages paid was RM23.8 billion, an increase of 5.0 per cent as compared to the previous year and 1.6 per cent quarter-on-quarter. Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation Total revenue for Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment registered a growth of 8.5 per cent to RM316.2 billion as compared to the same quarter 2016. The increase was driven by Food & Beverages sub-sector, 10.8 per cent. This segment recorded an increase of 2.3 per cent as compared to the previous quarter. Number of persons engaged in this segment increased 2.1 per cent to 2.7 million persons as compared to the fourth quarter 2016. Salaries & wages paid grew 4.4 per cent to RM14.1 billion. Quarter-on-quarter, number of persons engaged recorded positive growth 1.1 per cent or 29,114 persons, while salaries & wages paid increased 0.9 per cent. Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment posted an increase in total revenue to RM60.0 billion or 7.9 per cent as against the same quarter of the previous year. The growth was propelled by Information & Communication sub-sector, 9.3 per cent. Meanwhile, on quarterly basis, the total revenue for this segment registered an increase of 7.0 per cent. The number of persons engaged for this segment increased 0.9 per cent year-on-year to 470,065 persons, whilst salaries & wages paid also grew to RM5.2 billion (5.0%). The number of persons engaged increased by 1.3 per cent while salaries & wages paid has also increased 4.5 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Health , Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation segment recorded total revenue of RM15.0 billion, an increase of 8.6 per cent compared to RM13.9 billion in fourth quarter 2016. The growth of this segment was driven by Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (9.9%) sub-sector. Total revenue of this segment increased by 0.6 per cent as compared to the previous quarter. Number of persons engaged increased by 2.4 per cent to 276,543 persons as compared to corresponding quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid also increased 5.0 per cent to RM2.2 billion. On a quarterly basis, number of persons engaged increased by 0.4 per cent while salaries & wages paid recorded negative growth of 0.4 per cent. Professional and Real Estate Agent Total revenue for Professional and Real Estate Agent segment rosed 14.7 per cent to RM8.5 billion as against the same quarter of previous year. This increase was driven by Professional sub-sector (15.3%). For the quarterly comparison, this segment also recorded an increase to 14.8 per cent. In fourth quarter 2017, number of persons engaged increased 175,427 persons or 5.7 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid grew 8.5 per cent to RM2.3 billion. As compared to the preceding quarter, number of persons engaged rose 1.8 per cent, while salaries & wages paid recorded growth 1.6 per cent. *Notes: Data for fourth quarter 2017 is provisional.
