2. The index of Wholesale & Retail Trade expanded by 6.1 per cent during the fourth quarter 2016 as compared to the same period in 2015. The growth was mainly supported by the Retail Trade and Wholesale Trade sub-sectors which increased by 7.9 per cent and 7.0 per cent respectively. The Motor Vehicles sub-sector went down to -1.9 per cent. The seasonally adjusted Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade went up by 3.2 per cent as against the third quarter 2016. The increase was contributed by the Motor Vehicles (4.6%), Retail Trade (4.5%) and Wholesale Trade (0.6%) sub-sectors. The increase was driven by Other Specialised Wholesale (13.5%), Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment and Supplies (5.5%) and Wholesale of Food, Beverages and Tobacco (4.9%). Performance of Retail Trade Sub-sector In fourth quarter 2016, the Retail Trade sub-sector registered an increase of 7.9 per cent year-on-year. The growth was supported by Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (14.5%), Retail Sale of Information and Communications Equipment in Specialised Stores (10.3%) and Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (9.2%). Performance of Motor Vehicles Sub-sector The index of Motor Vehicles which includes Parts and Accessories dropped to -1.9 per cent in the fourth quarter 2016 as against the same quarter 2015. The decrease was due to the decline in Sale of Motor Vehicles (-7.1%).
