- EMBARGO : Only to be published or disseminated at 1200 hours, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS MALAYSIA PRESS RELEASE ANNUAL ECONOMIC STATISTICS 2018 ECONOMIC SECTOR INTRODUCTION This report presents statistics on the overall economic sector based on information obtained from the Annual Economic Survey conducted in 2018 for reference year 2017. It comprises of Agriculture, Mining & quarrying, Manufacturing, Construction and Services. OVERALL PERFORMANCE Annual Economic Survey 2018 recorded gross output value of RM2,834.6 billion in 2017 compared to RM2,489.5 billion in
- 2015 , translating into an average annual growth rate of 6.7 per cent. In line with the growth in gross output, the value of intermediate input also increased by RM190.2 billion to record RM1,696.6 billion, with annual growth of 6.1 per cent and thus resulting a value added of RM1,138.0 billion for the year of 2017. The number of persons engaged also reported an increase of 4.9 per cent to 9,616,700 persons as compared to 8,732,238 persons in 2015. Meanwhile, the salaries & wages paid in 2017 amounted to RM284.7 billion compared to RM245.7 billion. VALUE OF GROSS OUTPUT The main contributor for value of gross output was Manufacturing sector which amounted to RM1,275.8 billion with share of 45.0 per cent. This was followed by Services of RM1,111.8 billion (39.2%) and Construction with RM204.4 billion (7.2%). These three sectors contributed 91.4 per cent to the value of gross output of all economic sectors. VALUE ADDED In 2017, all sectors recorded a value added of RM1,138.0 billion compared to RM983.1 billion in 2015 with annual growth rate of 7.6 per cent. The main contributor was Services sector which recorded a value added of RM596.6 billion with a share of 52.4 per cent. This was followed by Manufacturing sector of RM 294.0 billion (25.9%) and Mining & quarrying with RM119.8 billion (10.5%). NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED AND CATEGORY OF WORKERS Number of persons engaged for all sectors was 9,616,700 persons in 2017 in which male workers dominated 68.3 per cent (6,565,835 persons) of the total number of workers. Services, Manufacturing and Construction sectors provided the highest job opportunities with 5,168,613 persons (53.8 %), 2,214,883 persons (23.0 %) and 1,330,266 persons (13.8 %) respectively. Category of paid employees (full-time and part-time) recorded a total of 8,463,707 persons (88.0%), while 1,152,993 persons (12.0%) were working proprietors and unpaid family workers. Based on total number of full-time employees, clerical and related occupations was the largest group of number of persons engaged with 5,044,548 persons (61.3%), followed by manager, professional & researcher with 1,212,697 persons (14.7%) and elementary occupation with 1,203,264 persons (14.6%). SALARIES & WAGES Total salaries & wages paid in all sectors for the year of 2017 amounted to RM284.7 billion. Services sector recorded the highest salaries & wages with RM152.2 billion. Manufacturing sector ranked second with RM74.9 billion followed by Construction with RM39.2 billion. Collectively, the share of salaries & wages for all three sectors were RM266.3 billion (93.5%).
