  1. CONSUMER SURVEY January 2017  The Bank Indonesia Consumer Survey confirmed that consumers remained upbeat on economic conditions in Indonesia. The latest data pointed to a Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) that remained in optimistic territory at 115.3 in January 2017, relatively stable compared to the 115.4 posted one month earlier.  The Survey also revealed that consumers anticipated heightened inflationary pressures in the upcoming three and six months. Rising energy prices in the form of electricity tariffs and more expensive fuel edged up the 3-month Price Expectations Index (PEI) 9.0 points to 171.8. Likewise, the 6-month PEI (July 2017) was observed to climb 4.4 points to 176.0.  Congruent with more intense inflationary pressures expected in the upcoming six months, consumers also predicted smaller increases in the levels of savings and debt compared to conditions one month earlier . Consumer Confidence Index Consumer optimism remained relatively stable in January 2017. The Bank Indonesia Consumer Survey confirmed relatively stable consumer optimism in January 2017. The latest data pointed to a CCI that remained in optimistic territory at 115.3, despite a slight 0.1-point drop on the month earlier. Consumers were less upbeat due to a decrease in the Consumer Expectation Index (CEI) of 1.5 points to 126.4, while the Current Economic Condition Index (CECI) was observed to climb 1.4 points to 104.2 (Graph 1). Moreover, since January 2007 the Survey has involved 4,600 households as respondents (stratified random sampling) in 18 cities, namely Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Medan, Makassar, Bandar Lampung, Palembang, Banjarmasin, Padang, Pontianak, Samarinda, Manado, Denpasar, Mataram, Pangkal Pinang, Ambon and Banten. The index of each city is calculated using the balanced score method (net balance + 100), which indicates that a score of 100 is considered optimistic and an index of below 100 is pessimistic.   2. Consumer Survey households spending Rp4-5 million per month also reported the largest CCI decline . Current Economic Condition Index Consumers were increasingly upbeat on current economic conditions in the reporting period. Survey respondents perceived more favourable current economic conditions in the reporting period, reflecting a bump of 1.4 points in the CECI to 104.2. The increase was driven by all component indexes, particularly conditions for buying durable goods, which increased 3.3 points to 105.4. In addition, the indexes for current income and current job availability were both observed to increase, by 0.6 points and 0.2 points respectively, to 118.5 and 88.8 (Graph 2). Graph 2. Current Economic Condition Index by Components Respondents reported CECI gains in 11 cities, especially in Makassar (25.5 points) and Ambon (23.4 points), while those with a monthly spend of Rp2-3 million disclosed the largest CECI increase (Table 4). Consumer Expectation Index Consumers were less upbeat on economic conditions in the upcoming six months. Consumer were less upbeat on economic conditions in the upcoming six months compared to one month ago. The survey indicated a 1.5-point dip in the CEI on the previous period to 126.4. A perceived future decrease of business activity in the next six months drag down consumer expectations, with the corresponding index falling 7.2 points to 125.1. In contrast, consumers expected incomes and job availability to improve, reflected by gains of 1.7 and 0.9 points in the respective indexes (Graph 3). Regionally, nine cities experienced a decrease in the CEI, particularly in Samarinda (-28.8 points) and Banten (-21.0 points), along with those spending Rp4-5 million per month (Table 4). Component of Consumer Expectation Index by Components Price Expectations Index Consumers predicted inflationary pressures to accumulate in the next three and six months. Consumers anticipated inflationary pressures to accumulate in April 2017, with the 3-month PEI climbing 9.0 points from 162.8 last period to 171.8 (Graph 4). Rising energy prices in the form of electricity tariffs and more expensive fuel in the next three months edged up the corresponding index. Regionally, respondents in 14 cities reported a higher 3-month PEI, especially in Pangkal Pinang (38.0 points) and Banjarmasin (33.5 points). Consumers predicted inflationary pressures to continue building in the next six months (July 2017), reflecting a jump in the 6-month PEI from 171.6 last month to 176.0 (Graph 5). Consumers cited the seasonal spike in demand during Eid-ul-Fitr, coupled with rising fuel prices, for heightened pressures on the future prices of goods and services. Graph 4. Congruent with the lower CCI, the average propensity to consume ratio was observed to fall 6.8% in January 2017 to 63.0%. Conversely, both the debt-to-income ratio and savings-to-income ratio posted gains of 3.9% and 2.9% respectively to 16.9% and 20.1% in the reporting period (Graph 6). Graph 6. Distribution of Household Income Allocation Consumers predicted smaller increases in the levels of savings and debt in the next six months. Consumers predicted a smaller increase in the level of savings in the next six months (July 2017) compared to conditions one month earlier. Accordingly, the 6-month savings expectation index was shown to decrease 13.1 points to 113.1. On the other hand, the 6-month debt expectation index decreased 13.4 points on the position recorded one month ago to 148.8 (Graph 7). Real Sector Statistics Division 4
