EMBARGO : Only to be published or disseminated at 1200 hours, Friday, 21 October 2016 DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS MALAYSIA PRESS RELEASE MALAYSIAN ECONOMIC INDICATORS: LEADING, COINCIDENT & LAGGING INDEXES AUGUST 2016 Highlights The Leading Index (LI) which monitors the economic performance in advance for August 2016 moved up by 2.0% to 117.4 points from 115.1 points in July 2016. The favourable growth in the current month was supported by the increases in Real Imports of Other Basic Precious & Other Non-ferrous Metal (1.5%), Number of New Companies Registered (0.9%), Real Money Supply, M1 (0.5%) and Bursa Malaysia Industrial Index (0.2%). The annual change of LI rose to 0.2% in August 2016 as against negative 2.5%, last month. The Coincident Index (CI) which measures the current economic activity, grew by 0.6% in the reference month. The main components that contributed to the increase were Capacity Utilisation in Manufacturing Sector (0.3%), Total Employment in Manufacturing Sector and Real Salaries & Wages in Manufacturing Sector which recorded 0.2%, respectively. However, the annual change of CI decreased slightly to 2.3% in August 2016 from 2.4% in July 2016. The LI and CI showed a positive annual change in August 2016. The Diffusion Index for LI reached 57.1% while the Diffusion Index for CI was below 50.0%. In summary, the Malaysian economic growth is expected to expand further at a slower rate in the months ahead.
