EMBARGO : Only to be published or disseminated at 1200 hours, 11 August 2016 DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS MALAYSIA PRESS RELEASE INDEX OF SERVICES (2010=100) SECOND QUARTER 2016 Index of Services in second quarter 2016 showed a better performance of 5.6 per cent Performance of Services Sector The Index of Services grew by 5.6 per cent in the second quarter of 2016 as compared with the same quarter last year. The increase was driven by the growth in the segment of Communication and Transport & Storage (7.3%); Distributive Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation (6.3%); Other Services (5.3%) and Finance, Real Estate and Professional (2.8%). As compared with the previous quarter, the seasonally adjusted index of services sector edged up by 0.1 per cent. 2. Distributive Trade , Food & Beverages and Accommodation The segment of Distributive Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation rose by 6.3 per cent as compared with the same quarter of 2015. This increase was contributed by sub-sectors of Distributive Trade, 6.4 per cent; followed by Food & Beverages, 6.3 per cent and Accommodation, 5.0 per cent. The seasonally adjusted index of Distributive Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation increased by 0.6 per cent as compared to the previous quarter. Finance, Real Estate and Professional The index of Finance, Real Estate and Professional segment went up by 2.8 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter of 2015. This increase was driven by the Professional sub-sector, 9.7 per cent; Real Estate, 4.9 per cent and Finance & Insurance, 1.1 per cent. The seasonally adjusted index of Finance, Real Estate and Professional segment decreased to -1.9 per cent as against the first quarter of 2016. Communication and Transport & Storage In this quarter, Communication and Transport & Storage segment expanded by 7.3 per cent as compared to the same quarter of 2015. This increase was led by the positive growth of 8.7 per cent in Information & Communication sub-sector and 5.1 per cent in Transportation & Storage sub-sector. On a quarterly basis, the seasonally adjusted index of Communication and Transport & Storage segment grew by 1.5 per cent. Other Services Year on year, the index of Other Services posted an increase of 5.3 per cent. This increase was supported by the growth in Private Education, 6.1 per cent; Private Health, 5.4 per cent and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation, 4.4 per cent. The seasonally adjusted index in this segment increased marginally by 0.1 per cent as compared to the previous quarter. *Notes: Data for second quarter 2016 is provisional.
