Bargain hunting, amidst losses in the currency on Friday, despite a robust US jobs report, also supported strength in the greenback. The CAD rose against its US counterpart as a narrower gap between Canadian and US yields offset lower prices for oil, one of Canada's major exports. GBP held gains against the dollar rising 0.4% as Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon demanded a new independence referendum in late 2018 or early 2019, once the terms of the UK’s exit from the EU becomes clearer, thereby reducing political uncertainty. Against the yen, the dollar was little changed ahead of Bank of Japan’s policy decision with the market not expecting any significant change to the BoJ's generally dovish policies.
