  2. Macroeconomic & Corporate News Royal Jordanian eyes operating profit this year – CEO Royal Jordanian Airlines expects to make an operating profit this year as it pushes ahead with a turnaround plan, its chief executive told Reuters on Friday. "I am pretty confident that after the first five months of this year, which were not very good, that we are going to have an operating profit in this year," Stefan Pichler, who took over as CEO in June, said on the sidelines of the CAPA global summit in London. "We've worked very hard to develop a turnaround programme to get back to profitability," he said. Pichler said the board had approved the turnaround plan last week and Royal Jordanian would now work on a fleet plan. Jordan's flag carrier currently flies a mix of Embraer, Airbus and Boeing jets and Pichler said ideally it would move to a single narrow body supplier in the future. "We are discussing with all suppliers," he said. He said Royal Jordanian was looking to focus on its regional market in the Levant and wanted to be poised to take advantage of the Syrian market when it reopens. Pichler said Royal Jordanian was trying not to put too much capacity into the market as it seeks to fly fuller planes. Jordan, Egypt to enhance electricity projects Jordan and Egypt has agreed to enhance electricity connection between the two countries and form a team to study the establishment of a second power line project, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Wednesday. The two sides signed a number of memoranda of understanding for operating and maintaining oil and gas pipelines and networks in the Kingdom, and to prepare economic feasibility studies on natural gas supplies for household, trade and industrial use. These agreements were signed during a visit by the Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Saleh Kharabsheh to Egypt, where he met with the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla and the Minister of Electricity and Energy Mohamed Shaker, and discussed with them the aspects of energy cooperation and joint projects. Jordan, Lithuania open ‘new scopes’ for commercial exchange A recent visit by a Jordanian commercial and industrial delegation to Lithuania has opened new scopes for cooperation in the trade and investment fields, as well as for promoting the Kingdom as a business hub in the region, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Saturday. The visit, organised by the consulate of Lithuania in Jordan in cooperation with the Amman Chamber of Commerce (ACC), has provided grounds for increasing commercial exchange between the two countries and for reviewing the Kingdom’s economic and investment opportunities. Ahmad Armoush, the honorary consular of Lithuania in Jordan, said that the visit came as a follow up of the outcomes of His Majesty King Abdullah’s meeting with Lithuanian President Dalia GrybauskaitÄ—, during her visit to the Kingdom in May 2016. Armoush said that the delegation, headed by Industry, Trade and Supply Minister Yarub Qudah and ACC President Issa Murad, included representatives of the private sector, Jordan Investment Commission, Jordan Tourism Board and the Jordanian Embassy in the Netherlands. He added that the visit was paving the way for increasing commercial exchange and establishing “good” economic relations in the fields of maritime transport, tourism, medical tourism and educational exchange. * Source: Bloomberg, Jordan Times, Zawya Disclaimer Awraq Investments and its affiliates obtain information from sources they believe to be reliable, but do not warrant its accuracy or fitness for a particular purpose, and disclaim for themselves and their information providers all liability arising from the use.
