EMBARGO : Only to be published or disseminated at 1200 hours, Friday, 10 February 2017 DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS MALAYSIA PRESS RELEASE The Revenue for Services Sector Increased 5.5 per cent or RM368.1 billion in the Fourth Quarter 2016 Introduction This report presents statistics on services sector which encompasses sub-sector of Wholesale & Retail Trade; Information & Communication; Transportation & Storage; Food & Beverages; Professional; Private Health; Private Education; Accommodation; Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Real Estate Agent for the period from first quarter 2012 until fourth quarter 2016. Principal statistics reported are total revenue/ sales value, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid.

Performance of Services Sector , Fourth Quarter 2016 Performance of Services Sector The Services sector increased 5.5 per cent or RM368.1 billion in the fourth quarter 2016 as compared with the same quarter 2015. The increase was contributed by Professional and Real Estate Agent (6.6%) and Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (6.4%) segments. The total revenue on quarterly basis increased by RM13.3 billion or 3.7 per cent. Total number of persons engaged in this sector was 3.5 million persons, an increase of 84,546 persons or 2.4 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. On a quarterly basis, the number of persons engaged rose by 38,395 persons (1.1%). In the fourth quarter 2016, salaries & wages paid was RM22.5 billion, an increase of 3.3 per cent as compared to the previous year and 2.0 per cent quarter-on-quarter. Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation The total revenue for Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment registered a growth of 5.9 per cent (RM291.5 billion) as compared to the same quarter 2015. The increase was driven by Wholesale & Retail Trade (6.0%), Food & Beverages (4.5%) and Accommodation (1.5%) sub-sector. This segment recorded an increase of 3.0 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The number of persons engaged in this segment increased to 3.1 per cent or 78,312 persons as compared to the fourth quarter 2015. Salaries & wages paid grew by 5.2 per cent to RM13.5 billion. Quarter-on-quarter, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid increased to 1.2 per cent and 1.0 per cent respectively. Information & Communication and Transport & Storage Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment posted an increase in total revenue to RM55.4 billion or 2.8 per cent as against the same quarter of the preceding year. This increased was propelled by Transportation & Storage (5.8%) sub-sector. On a quarterly basis, the total revenue for this segment registered an increase of 7.3 per cent. Year-on-year, the number of persons engaged for this segment are 465,457 persons (-0.1%) whilst salaries & wages paid decreased to RM5.0 million (-1.2%). The number of persons engaged increased by 1.0 per cent while salaries & wages paid increased of 5.2 per cent in the current quarter as compared to the previous quarter.

Health , Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation Total revenue for Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation segment rose by 6.4 per cent or RM13.8 billion in this quarter as compared to the fourth quarter 2015. The growth was led by Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (7.2%) followed by Private Health (6.1%) and Private Education (5.6%) sub-sector. Quarter-on-quarter, total revenue increased by 0.5 per cent. The number of persons engaged increased by 1.4 per cent or 268,526 persons as compared to the same period in the previous year. Salaries & wages paid also grew 4.6 per cent to RM2.1 billion. On a quarterly basis, the number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid recorded an increase of 0.7 per cent and 1.8 per cent respectively. Professional and Real Estate Agent The total revenue for Professional and Real Estate Agent segment rose by 6.6 per cent to RM7.3 billion as against the same quarter of previous year. Real Estate Agent and Professional sub-sectors showed an increase of 7.8 per cent and 6.5 per cent respectively. On quarterly basis, this segment increased by 12.7 per cent. In the fourth quarter 2016, the number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid increased to 164,234 persons (1.7%) and RM1.9 billion (1.3%) respectively. As compared to the preceding quarter, the number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid rose by 0.5 per cent respectively. *Notes: Data for fourth quarter 2016 is provisional.
