Malaysia Sales Value of Wholesale Retail Trade Stood at RM93.6 Billion in January 2017

EMBARGO : Only to be published or disseminated at 1200 hours, Wednesday, 15 March 2017 DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS MALAYSIA PRESS RELEASE SALES VALUE OF WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE STOOD AT RM93.6 BILLION IN JANUARY 2017 HIGHLIGHTS Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade stood at RM93.6 billion in January 2017, registering 8.0 per cent growth as compared to the corresponding period in 2016. The sales value consists of Wholesale Trade (RM46.1 billion), Retail Trade (RM36.1 billion) and Motor Vehicles (RM11.4 billion) businesses. The positive growth was contributed by Retail Trade (9.0%) and Wholesale Trade (8.4%) businesses. The index of Wholesale & Retail Trade which measures the volume changes rose 5.6 per cent to 152.1 points in January 2017 as compared to January 2016. The growth was led by Retail Trade (7.0%), Wholesale Trade (5.4%) and Motor Vehicles (2.4%). However, the seasonally adjusted index of Wholesale & Retail Trade decreased 1.5 per cent as compared to the preceding month.
  2. Wholesale Trade Business Sales value of Wholesale Trade business registered 8 .4 per cent growth to RM46.1 billion as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. On a monthly basis, sales value of this business increased 0.8 per cent. The index of Wholesale Trade grew 5.4 per cent to 159.9 points in January 2017 as compared to January 2016. Month-on-month, the index of Wholesale Trade (seasonally adjusted) decreased 1.7 per cent as against the previous month. Retail Trade Business Retail Trade business recorded an increase in sales value of RM3.0 billion or 9.0 per cent as compared to last year. Month-on-month, this business dropped 0.1 per cent. The index of Retail Trade rose 7.0 per cent to 155.8 points in January 2017 as compared to the same month a year earlier. Compared to the previous month, the seasonally adjusted index of Retail Trade went down 0.6 per cent. Motor Vehicles Business In this month, sales value of Motor Vehicles business increased 3.7 per cent to RM11.4 billion as compared to the same month of the preceding year. On a monthly basis, sales value of Motor Vehicles business declined 9.4 per cent. Year-on-year, the index of Motor Vehicles increased 2.4 per cent to 122.8 points in January 2017. The seasonally adjusted index of Motor Vehicles went down 4.7 per cent in January 2017 as against December 2016.
