While we anticipate late window-dressing activity to prop up the index to re-test the year high ahead of the New Year weekend break, profit-taking and selling could increase considerably to check gains. South Korea’s Kospi Led Asia Higher Asian markets gains broadened Thursday in muted trading after a listless U.S. session overnight offered little direction ahead of the New Year holidays. Stateside, Wall Street closed slightly higher on Wednesday amid thin trade as gains in real estate and utilities offset losses among energy and telecommunications names. Copper remained a standout trade, soaring for a ninth straight session on Wednesday to a level not seen since early 2014 on expectations of strong demand from top consumer China. Prices of the metal, considered a barometer for global growth and used widely in power and construction, are up 30 percent in the calendar year so far. Trade was light across the board with many market participants on holiday. Across the Korean Strait, the Kospi stood out from its peers, closing up 30.82 points, or 1.26 percent, at 2,467.49, as Samsung Electronics and smaller chip maker SK Hynix each rose more than 1 percent. China stocks also rallied on Thursday, underpinned by robust gains in consumer and materials firms. The Shanghai Composite index was up 21.42 points or 0.65 percent at 3,297.21. In Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.30 percent, as gains in the resources space were offset by losses in utilities and real estate investment trusts. Meanwhile, Japan’s Nikkei share average erased its earlier gains, as the yen gained and banking shares extended their losses. The Nikkei finished down 0.6 percent at 22,783.98, while the broader Topix slipped 0.6 percent to 1,819.03. Page 1 of 7
  5. 29-Dec-17 st Dow Logged 71 Record Close Ahead of Year ’s Final Trading Day The Dow Jones Industrial Average on Thursday logged its 71st record close in 2017, buoyed by gains in financial stocks and as technology stocks continued to slowly recover from a losing skid. Tech stocks notched their second straight gain on the heels of a five-session losing skid. The index has struggled somewhat to close out the year but remains the best-performing sector in 2017, up more than 37 percent. Shares of financial firms were also among the strongest performers for the day as the yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury bill edge up to 2.43 percent from 2.41 percent Wednesday. In economic front, the advance trade deficit in goods increased to USD69.7 billion in November from USD68.1 billion in October. Weekly jobless claims came in at 245,000 versus expectations of 240,000. Volumes remained thin due to the holiday week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. The prior two sessions showed the lowest full-day trading volumes of the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 63.21 points, or 0.26 percent, to 24,837.51, the S&P 500 gained 4.92 points, or 0.18 percent, to 2,687.54 and the Nasdaq Composite added 10.82 points, or 0.16 percent, to 6,950.16. 8. 29-Dec-17 N e w s I n B r i e f Economy Asia Japan Industrial Production , Retail Sales Rise in November Industrial production in Japan rose in November, fueled by strong growth in exports. Retail sales rebounded to top expectations. Industrial production rose 0.6% in November from October (forecast +0.5%). Year-on-year production climbed 3.7% (forecast +3.6%). Production is forecast to increase 3.4% this month compared to November, and fall 4.5% in January. The main contributors to November production were semiconductor equipment and electronic parts. November retail sales rose 1.9% from October (forecast +0.7%). Sales increased 2.2% from a year earlier (forecast +1%). Sales at department stores and supermarkets rose 1.4% from a year earlier (forecast +1%). A yearlong recovery in exports has bolstered industrial output, supporting Japan’s longest economic expansion since the mid-1990s. Yet increasing domestic consumption remains key to the recovery becoming self-sustaining. Retailers are seeing more favorable conditions after bad weather kept Japanese shoppers at home through much of the third quarter, with household spending beating expectations last month. (Bloomberg) Bank of Korea to Maintain Accommodative Policy Stance in 2018 The Bank of Korea said that it will maintain the accommodative policy stance next year so as to ensure that the recovery of economic growth continues and consumer price inflation stabilize at the target level. The economy is forecast to retain its solid trend of growth, at a rate around 3% per year. According to BoK, exports will continue their improvement trend, due to the ongoing recovery of the global economy. At the same time, private consumption is expected to pick up moderately driven in part by an increase in government fiscal spending. Nonetheless, the bank cautioned that there remain some uncertainties concerning the future growth path. Inflation is expected to rise to approach its target level under the mixed effects of factors pushing it up, such as increased demand-side inflationary pressures and factors pulling it down including the weakening the base effects related to petroleum product prices, the bank said. (RTT News) United States U.S. Jobless Claims Unchanged at 245,000 Last Week The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits held steady last week, remaining near historically low levels as 2017 draws to a close. Initial jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs across the U.S., were a seasonally adjusted 245,000 in the week ended Dec. 23, unchanged from the prior week, the Labor Department said. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected 240,000 new claims last week. Data on jobless claims can be volatile from week to week, and seasonal adjustments tend to be especially tricky around holidays; Monday was Christmas Day. The four-week moving average for claims rose 1,750 to 237,750 last week. After spiking in the wake of several powerful late-summer hurricanes, jobless claims have settled down to low levels consistent with broad health in the U.S. labor market. Weekly initial unemployment applications have remained below 300,000 for 147 straight weeks—the longest such streak since 1970, when the U.S. population and workforce were far smaller than they are today. The effects of Hurricanes Irma and Maria are still being felt in some U.S. territories. The Labor Department warned that “claims taking procedures continue to be disrupted in the Virgin Islands” and that the process in Puerto Rico “has still not returned to normal.” (The Wall Street Journal) Page 5 of 7
  9. 29-Dec-17 Two of Fed ’s Newest Faces to Join Rate-Setting Panel in 2018 Two of the newest Federal Reserve officials will step into the spotlight in 2018 when they assume voting seats for the first time on the central bank’s interest-rate-setting committee, weighing how to keep a buoyant economy on an even keel in the new year. One of them, McKinsey & Co. executive Thomas Barkin, starts his new job as Richmond Fed president Jan. 1. The other, former Obama administration housing official Raphael Bostic, became Atlanta Fed president in June. Not much is known publicly about their monetary policy leanings, so market participants will be parsing their words intensely for clues. Mr. Barkin doesn’t have a public record of speeches or articles on economic matters such as labor markets, inflation dynamics and interest rates. Mr. Bostic’s public remarks in recent months suggest he likely supported the Fed’s decision to raise short-term interest rates earlier this month, but revealed no strong inclination to lift borrowing costs more or less aggressively in the future. (The Wall Street Journal) Oil Prices Stay Near High on Strong U.S. Refinery Runs, China Data Oil prices dipped on Thursday but stayed close to their highest in 2-1/2 years, as data showed strong demand for crude imports in China and on increased refining activity in the United States that drew more crude from inventories. Trading was typically thin at year end, with many traders on vacation. The U.S. Energy Department said crude stocks fell 4.6 million barrels in the latest week. Inventories excluding the nation’s strategic reserve have declined more than 11% in the last year. U.S. refining runs increased, pushing overall capacity use among the nation’s refiners to 95.7%, highest in December dating to 1998, according to the U.S. Energy Department. Refiners have profited in recent months as the spread widened between U.S. crude and Brent futures prices. (Reuters) Chicago Business Barometer Unexpectedly Indicates Faster Growth in December Chicago-area business activity unexpectedly expanded at a faster rate in the month of December, MNI Indicators revealed in a report. MNI Indicators said its Chicago business barometer climbed to 67.6 in December from 63.9 in November, with a reading above 50 indicating growth. The increase surprised economists, who had expected the business barometer to drop to 62.0. The unexpected advance lifted the index to its highest level since March of 2011. Stronger growth in both output and demand contributed to the unexpected increase by the business barometer, with the production index and the new orders index each rising to multi-year highs. The production index rose to its highest level in thirty-four years, while the new orders index reached a three-and-a-half year high. MNI Indicators said the order backlogs index also increased, while the employment index and the supplier deliveries index fell on the month. (RTT News) Europe and Uni ted Kingdom ECB Bulletin: Robust Growth Expected to Continue in 2018 Eurozone's economic expansion remains solid and broad-based, and is expected to sustain its strong momentum into next year, the European Central Bank said in its regular bulletin. "Overall, incoming data are generally pointing to unabated upside growth momentum in the fourth quarter of 2017 and around the turn of the year, with robust growth expected to continue in 2018," the ECB said. That said, the 19-nation economy still need the support from abundant monetary stimulus to see a return of inflation to near 2%, despite a strong and broad-based expansion in output, the bank said. The ECB Staff raised the growth projections for euro area in its latest round of forecasts. They now see 2.4% growth for this year, 2.3% for 2018, 1.9% for 2019 and 1.7% in 2020. The ongoing recovery is led by domestic demand, supported by growth in private consumption, investment and exports, the report noted. Labor markets continue to exhibit strong dynamics and the improvements are likely to continue, the ECB said. The report also mentioned increasing signs of labor shortages in some countries and sectors. Further, the ECB expects the housing market recovery to Page 6 of 7

(RTT News) UK Private Sector Growth Accelerates in Q4: CBI The UK private sector growth picked up in the fourth quarter, the Confederation of British Industry said. According to the latest growth indicator, the balance of firms reporting a rise in output was +19%, compared with +6% in the three months to November. Looking ahead, the CBI said private sector growth is set to return to a more moribund pace of +4% over the next three months. "Private sector firms are enjoying healthy activity levels as we approach the year end, but mediocre expectations for growth underline the ongoing challenges facing companies," Anna Leach, CBI head of economic intelligence, said. "Persistent cost pressures will ensure that inflation remains at a high level, perpetuating the squeeze on household spending, particularly impacting consumer-facing firms and retailers," she said. Separately, UK mortgage approvals declined to a 15-month low in November, data from UK Finance showed. The number of mortgages approved in November fell to 39,507 from 40,417 in October. This was the lowest since August 2016, when approvals totaled 38,308. Gross mortgage borrowing was GBP 13.9 billion, which was 13% higher than in November 2016. Annual growth in net mortgage borrowing came in at 2.8%. Credit card borrowing grew 5.3% versus 5.0% in October. Meanwhile, personal loans and overdrafts dropped 3.1% following a 2.8% drop in October. At the same time, overall consumer credit growth remained at 0.9%. 13. COMPANY UPDATE Friday , December 29, 2017 FBMKLCI: 1,779.10 Sector: Gaming THIS REPORT IS STRICTLY FOR INTERNAL CIRCULATION ONLY* TP: RM0.105 (0.0%) Luster Industries Berhad Last Traded: RM0.105 Take Profit SELL Tan Kam Meng, CFA Tel: +603-2167 9605 kmtan@ta.com.my Share price performance YTD, Luster Industries (Luster) share has had a good run and outperformed the FBMKLCI. The share has advanced by 110% and we attribute the decent performance to the success in turning around the company, after a series of losses for the past 3 consecutive years. Recall, Luster’s manufacturing division was hit by the implementation of minimum wage policy in FY15. It had trimmed its workforce and incurred some one-off retrenchment costs in FY16. This has resulted in the manufacturing segment recorded a PBT of RM4.0mn for 9M17 versus a loss before tax of RM2.6mn in FY16. Also, we attribute to profit turnaround to its 60%-owned subsidiary, Pan Cambodian Lottery, which managed to record a PBT of RM0.4mn for 9M17 from a loss of RM1.9mn in FY16. Besides, the company registered its maiden profit from the property and construction unit after securing a few of low and medium-cost and affordable housing projects. Clearly after June-17 (see Figure 1), Luster share price has headed nowhere and the trading volume has dwindled precipitously. We believe the market is puzzled about the company’s plan with its casino licence in Cambodia. Note that in 2015, Luster acquired 60% stake in PCL for US$4.2mn, a company that is involved in lottery business and possesses a casino licence in Cambodia. Given that the lottery business is so small, it is always our belief that the main rationale behind the acquisition is to capitalise on PCL’s casino licence and kick-start its casino project in the border of Cambodia. However, nothing has Source: Bloomberg Page 1 of 3
  14. 29-Dec-17 been announced by the company so far and we suspect project funding could be the main hurdle here for the casino project . Nevertheless, the company announced several property development (see Figure 2) in Malaysia to enhance the group’s earnings. Having said that, these projects, which are mainly joint ventures with land owners, have short durations and expected to have low margins that would likely create another issue about future earnings sustainability. Valuation As we are in doubt over the future earnings sustainability and the casino project, we change our multi-stage growth discounted free cash flow (DCF) valuation model to stable growth DCF model. Specifically, we revise our growth assumptions for stage-2 (2021-2025) and stage-3 (2026-2030) to 4% from 10% and 5% respectively and maintain the terminal growth at 4%. Correspondingly, our target price for the stock is reduced to 10.5sen/share (from 14.5sen/share previously), based on an unchanged discount rate of 12%. We downgrade Luster to Sell (from Buy previously) and cease coverage on the stock, following the discontinuation of Bursa CBRS scheme. Page 2 of 3

- TENAGA TM The table above is a compilation of actively traded stocks with some popular technical indicators. The technical BUY/SELL signals on the last four columns are auto generated; the first two being existing or recent signals while the last two represent a signal change from BUY to SELL or the reverse, otherwise no change is indicated by a dash. INTERPRETATION OF TECHNICAL INDICATORS: Bollinger Bands: Variable width bands that narrow during less volatile periods and widen during more volatile periods. As a general rule, in a bearish trend, traders should buy when share price touches the lower band and exit when price touches the middle band. The reverse is true in a bullish trend, ie. Buy when price touches the middle band and sell when price touches the upper band. Momentum traders tend to buy on price breakouts above the upper band, and sell when price breaks down below the lower band. 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI): A reading below 30 is considered oversold, above 70 is overbought. A rise above 50 with a corresponding share price surge above the 30day moving average should be taken as a bullish move with good short-term upside potential. A fall below 50 and a simultaneous dip below the 30-day average is bearish and imply further near-term downside risk. Moving Averages: A stock’s short-term trend is bullish if share price stays above the 10-day moving average, and bearish if it stays below. The medium-term trend is positive if share price stays above the 30-day average, and negative if it remains below. A longer-term uptrend is intact if share price sustain above the 50-day average, and is deemed broken if it breaches below this level. Directional Movement Indicator (DMI): The DMI is an indicator of trend strength. A positive DMI difference (DMI diff) value is bullish and indicate a higher DI+ vs. DI-, while a negative DMI diff is bearish due to a lower DI+ vs. DI- (DMI diff = DI+ minus DI-). A crossover of DI+ above DI- triggers a BUY signal, while a SELL signal is flashed when the DI+ crosses below the DI-. The Average Directional Movement Index (ADX) indicates the strength of a trend, whether it is up or down. The higher the value of ADX, the stronger the trend. An ADX value above 25 suggests a trending market or stock, while a value below 20 signal congestion or absence of trend. Daily Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD): The MACD diff value is derived from the difference between the MACD line (the 12-day EMA minus the 26-day EMA) and the MACD signal line (the 9-day EMA of the MACD). A positive MACD diff value is bullish, while a negative MACD diff is bearish. A BUY signal is generated when the MACD diff rises above zero, and SELL signal sparked when the MACD diff value falls below zero. Page 1 of 3
  18. 29-Dec-17 Technical Comments : Bargain Gadang & SunCon A daily stochastics buy signal on Gadang enhances near-term upside momentum, with a decisive breakout above the 50%FR (RM1.13) to aim for the 61.8%FR (RM1.18) and 76.4%FR (RM1.25) ahead. Money Flow (MF) Calculation The value of money flow is set to zero at the start of the trading day. When a trade is performed, its price is compared to the price of the previous trade (the first trade of the day is compared to the previous day's close). If the prices differ, the money associated with the trade (price times number of shares) is added to or subtracted from the money flow. Additions (inflows, buys) are done on upticks; subtractions (outflows, sells) are done on downticks. Daily Money Flow (DMF) Interpretation In general, money flow trends confirm price trends. As prices rise, money flows are usually positive. As prices fall, money flows are usually negative. A divergence, however, between money flow and price trend can be a signal of a future price trend change. For example, a falling stock price with a positive money flow (IN) can indicate a future rally in the price of the stock. Conversely, a rising stock price with a negative money flow (OUT) implies potential correction in the stock price. This is a good watch list for momentum traders looking for short-term BUY ideas, as they are laggards with good upside potential towards the upper Bollinger band or higher to TAKE PROFIT/SELL. Caveat: Some stocks may continue to stay range bound and trade sideways, hence traders should refer to their respective charts to spot accumulation (volume growth) or breakout patterns. INTERPRETATION OF TECHNICAL INDICATORS: Moving Averages: A stock’s short-term trend is bullish if share price stays above the 10-day moving average, and bearish if it stays below. The medium-term trend is positive if share price stays above the 30-day, and negative if it remains below this average. 14-day RSI: A reading below 30 is considered oversold, above 70 is overbought. A rise above 50 with a corresponding share price surge above the 30-day SMA should be taken as a bullish move with good short-term upside potential. A fall below 50 and a simultaneous dip below the 30-day SMA is bearish and imply further near-term downside risk. Bollinger Bands: Variable width bands that narrow during less volatile periods and widen during more volatile periods. As a general rule, in a bearish trend, traders should buy when share price touches the lower band and exit when price touches the middle band. The reverse is true in a bullish trend, ie. Buy when price touches the middle band and sell when price touches the upper band. Momentum traders will buy on price breaks above the upper band, and sell when price breaks below the lower band. Alternatively, a sharp move that originates at one band tends to go all the way to the other band, a useful observation when projecting price targets. Page 1 of 2
