  2. Macroeconomic & Corporate News Saudis set $500bln plan to develop border region with Jordan, Egypt Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday a $500 billion plan to create a business and industrial zone extending across its borders into Jordan and Egypt, the biggest project yet in a series of efforts to free the kingdom of its dependence on oil exports. The 26,500 square km (10,230 square mile) zone, known as NEOM, will focus on industries including energy and water, biotechnology, food, advanced manufacturing and entertainment, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said. Adjacent to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba and near maritime trade routes that use the Suez Canal, the zone will power itself solely with wind power and solar energy, said the Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia's top sovereign fund. "NEOM is situated on one of the world's most prominent economic arteries ... Its strategic location will also facilitate the zone's rapid emergence as a global hub that connects Asia, Europe and Africa." Reuters and Bank al Etihad join forces to provide startups in Jordan access to services & funding Thomson Reuters and Bank al Etihad announced the launch of Accelerate SME Jordan (http://jordan.acceleratesme.com), a digital platform that serves as the single gateway to the SME ecosystem in the country. The platform provides startups and SMEs with access to the most comprehensive source of business resources, services and funding solutions and is designed to help organizations reach their business goals. “We recognize that today’s SMEs and entrepreneurs are the success stories of the future,” said Nadim Najjar, Managing Director, MENA Thomson Reuters. “We want to leverage our capabilities and partnerships with leading organizations to help support the SME ecosystem.” SMEs constitute around 95% of the national economy in Jordan and employ nearly 70% of the private sector's workforce. They are the backbone of the economy, yet many continue to struggle with setting up a new business, accessing funding for expansion, growing business and winning new customers. Accelerate SME Jordan addresses some of these challenges. Jordan approves new water agreement The Cabinet on Sunday approved a grant agreement intended to be signed between the government, the Water Authority of Jordan and the European Investment Bank to support the second phase of Wadi Al Arab water project, with a total value of 13.75 million euros. The scheme aims at increasing drinking water supply to the northern governorates through a developed water resource, reducing reliance on local wells, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Monday. The project aims at equipping local communities in the north to face drought and climate change, while contributing to economic and social development, Petra added. * Source: Bloomberg, Jordan Times, Zawya Disclaimer Awraq Investments and its affiliates obtain information from sources they believe to be reliable, but do not warrant its accuracy or fitness for a particular purpose, and disclaim for themselves and their information providers all liability arising from the use.
