Definition of "Taqsis"

A term used during the Ottoman period for debasement of currency by lowering gold or silver content of the coin. It was followed by individuals as well as by the government. It was devaluation of the currency, in effect and was often resorted to meet the shortage of money supply, which was constrained by the availability of metals.
