Definition of "Tiraz"
In the tenth century al-Andalus, a silken fabric embroidered with the name of the ruler in whose reign it was made, date and place of manufacture and the Qur’anic inscriptions. Production and export of tiraz was strictly regulated and the quality was overseen by the government appointed official sahib al-tiraz. It was not a trade item. But the rulers used it to present gifts to other rulers all over the Muslim world in that period.
