Fard-kifayah

Definition of "Fard-kifayah"

Lit: A collective duty upon Muslims, the discharge of which by some of them absolves the rest of its performance, such as salat al-janazah or jihad. Tech: It covers such functions that the community fails to (or cannot) perform and hence are taken over by the Islamic state, such as provision of utilities, building of roads, bridges and canals.
