Al-‘umra

Definition of "Al-‘umra"

Grant of land or property by state or by an individual free of cost, along with rights of ownership. Al-‘umra are unencumbered grants, which the descendants of the grantee inherit as any other property. But in certain cases, the donor may condition its use by the donee during the latter’s life-time. In such a case, the gift is inherited by the donor and his heirs and is not passed on to the heirs of the donee.
