Definition of "Al-masarif al-thamaniyah"
Eight heads of expenditure mentioned in the Qur’an about zakah. They are: fuqara’, masakin, zakah-collectors, those whose hearts have been reconciled, freeing of slaves, helping the poor debtors, fi sabil Allah (in the cause of Allah) and the wayfarers (ibn al-sabil) (Qur’an 9: 60). By a consensus of the ‘Ummah, zakah cannot be spent on any other head besides these.
