Survey Reveals 20% Retrenchment in Malaysia; Job Losses Could Exceed Two Million

According to the results of a survey conducted by the recruitment company JobStreet in May 2020, up to 20% of respondents in Malaysia who were previously employed have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey, which involved 5,000 participants, also showed that over two million Malaysians were expected to lose their jobs.
Gan Bock Herm, JobStreet’s Malaysia Manager, stated that 35% of Malaysian employees saw a decrease of over 30% of their salary during the movement control order (MCO) period. Herm also added that more than half (54%) of those surveyed were actively searching and applying for employment.
