2. HIGHLIGHTS Volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade rose 5.4 per cent to 168.3 points in March 2018 as compared to March 2017. The growth was supported by the increase in Wholesale Trade (7.0%) and Retail Trade (6.4%). Seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade decreased by 0.2 per cent as compared to the preceding month. Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade stood at RM103.8 billion, increased 6.5 per cent in March 2018 as compared to the corresponding period in 2017. The sales value consists of Wholesale Trade (RM50.7 billion), Retail Trade (RM40.8 billion) and Motor Vehicles (RM12.3 billion) businesses. The positive growth was contributed by Retail Trade (8.6%) and Wholesale Trade (8.0%) businesses. Wholesale Trade Business Volume index of Wholesale Trade grew 7.0 per cent to 178.6 points in March 2018 as compared to March 2017. Month-on-month basis, this volume index (seasonally adjusted) recorded positive growth 0.9 per cent as against the previous month. Sales value of Wholesale Trade business registered 8.0 per cent growth to RM50.7 billion as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. Month-on-month basis, this business registered positive growth 6.8 per cent. Retail Trade Business Volume index of Retail Trade rose 6.4 per cent to 173.6 points in March 2018 as compared to the same month of previous year. Compared to February 2018, seasonally adjusted volume index of Retail Trade increased by 0.5 per cent. Retail Trade business recorded an increase in sales value to RM40.8 billion or 8.6 per cent as compared to a year ago. Month-on-month, sales value of this business registered positive growth of 4.1 per cent. Motor Vehicles Business Year-on-year, volume index of Motor Vehicles recorded negative growth 3.7 per cent to 127.7 points in March 2018. Seasonally adjusted volume index of Motor Vehicles decreased 5.0 per cent in March 2018 as against February 2018. For this month, sales value of Motor Vehicles business recorded negative growth of 4.6 per cent to RM12.3 billion as compared to the same month of the preceding year. Sales value of Motor Vehicles business registered positive growth of 16.4 per cent as compared to the previous month.
