- EMBARGO : Only to be published or disseminated at 1200 hours, Friday, 23 December 2016 DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS MALAYSIA PRESS RELEASE MALAYSIAN ECONOMIC INDICATORS: LEADING, COINCIDENT & LAGGING INDEXES OCTOBER 2016 Highlights The Leading Index (LI) which monitors the economic performance in advance decreased 0.6% in October 2016. The LI was registered at 116.7 points as against 117.4 points recorded in the previous month. Two components that posted the highest percentage decrease were Real Imports of Semi Conductors (-0.9%) and Number of Housing Units Approved (-0.3%). The annual change of LI declined 1.4% in October 2016. The Coincident Index (CI) which measures the current economic activity, grew 0.2% in October 2016. The increase in CI was contributed by Industrial Production Index (0.2%), Volume Index of Retail Trade (0.2%) and Total Employment in Manufacturing Sector (0.1%). The annual change of CI rose 2.7% in the reference month. The annual change of CI remained favourable in October 2016. However, the LI posted a lower annual growth as compared to the previous month. Supported by the Diffusion Index for both indexes above 50.0%, this indicates that the economy is expected to continue expanding at a slower pace in the following months.
