SALES VALUE OF WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE RECORDED RM114.8 BILLION IN JANUARY 2020 HIGHLIGHTS A total of RM114.8 billion was recorded by sales of Wholesale & Retail Trade in January 2020, an increase of RM5.8 billion or 5.4 per cent as compared to the same month a year ago. The growth was attributed to Retail Trade which increased RM2.9 billion (+6.7%). Similarly, Wholesale Trade and Motor Vehicles rose RM2.8 billion (+5.2%) and RM0.1 billion (+1.0%) respectively. Volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade posted a growth of 5.5 per cent to reach 134.4 points as compared to the same month of the previous year. The key contributor for this growth was Retail Trade with 6.7 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it declined 0.4 per cent as against a month ago. For performance across sub-sector, Retail Trade led the other sub-sectors with year-on-year growth of 6.7 per cent. Within the same period, Wholesale Trade expanded 5.2 per cent, while Motor Vehicles rose 1.0 per cent. The growth of 5.5 per cent (year-on-year) in the volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade was driven by Retail Trade (6.7%). Wholesale Trade registered 5.3 per cent while Motor Vehicles posted 0.9 per cent. Wholesale Trade Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM55.6 billion in January 2020, increased RM2.8 billion (5.2%) as against the corresponding month of the previous year. The expansion was supported by Other Specialised Wholesale (7.5%), Wholesale of Household Goods (6.6%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (5.8%) and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (5.3%). For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector increased slower at 0.1 per cent. Volume index of Wholesale Trade expanded 5.3 per cent to 131.9 points in January 2020 as compared to the same month of the preceding year. Other Specialised Wholesale recorded the highest growth of 7.6 per cent. This was followed by Wholesale of Household Goods (7.4%) and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (5.9%). For monthly comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index of this sub-sector contracted 0.1 per cent. Retail Trade Sales of Retail Trade registered a year-on-year growth of 6.7 per cent as compared to January 2019. The expansion was fueled by Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (9.5%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (9.2%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (8.3%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (8.1%) and Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (8.0%). Volume index of Retail Trade rose 6.7 per cent to 147.7 points in January 2020. Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets recorded a growth of 9.4 per cent. This was followed by Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel which registered 8.7 per cent and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores of 7.9 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased at a slower pace 0.1 per cent as against December 2019. Motor Vehicles Sales value of Motor Vehicles went up 1.0 per cent as against the corresponding period of the previous year. The increment was supported by Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (3.1%), Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (3.0%) and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (2.0%). Compared to December 2019, sales value decreased 0.9 per cent. The volume index rose 0.9 per cent to 104.3 points compared to a year ago. It was propelled by Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles which recorded 2.1 per cent, Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 2.0 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 1.8 per cent respectively in January 2020. For monthly comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index decreased 1.2 per cent.
