Definition of "Ushr al-tijarah"

Lit: One-tenth of trade. Tech: A 10 per cent duty on all commercial imports by non-Muslims into the land of Islam. This was in vogue during the early Muslim period. The Muslims were exempt from this duty, if they imported anything into the land of Islam on the consideration that they were liable to pay zakah.
