Definition of "Al-tunna’"

A class of landlords during the ‘Abbasid period (AD 750–945), who were mostly absentee landlords, leaving management of their estates to their deputies. They often acted as contractors for tax collection and their riches accrued more from this latter activity. They were also known as al-tana’ah.
