Definition of "Al-dhimmi"

Historically, non-Muslims who came under the protection of the Islamic state after fighting and accepting the defeat. They were distinct from al-mu‘ahid (contractees) who agreed to live under the Muslim protection as a result of some peace agreement. Al-mu‘ahid were liable to pay tax according to the agreement whereas al-dhimmi paid jizyah.
