HIGHLIGHTS Construction sector declined 10 .5 per cent in first quarter 2021, an improvement from -14.2 per cent recorded in the previous quarter The value of construction work done in the first quarter 2021 grew -10.5 per cent (Q4 2020: -14.2%) year-on-year basis, amounting to RM31.4 billion (Q4 2020: RM31.7 billion). The Special trades activities sub-sector registered a growth of 38.0 per cent in the first quarter 2021. Meanwhile, the other three sub-sectors, namely Residential buildings, Non-residential buildings and Civil engineering each showed a growth of -4.2 per cent , -5.3 per cent and -22.3 per cent respectively, as compared with the same quarter 2020. The Department of Statistics Malaysia also reports the value of construction work done is dominant by Civil engineering subsector since fourth quarter 2015 with 39.0 per cent share. This followed by Non-residential buildings (27.4%), Residential buildings (25.8%) and Special trades activities (7.7%). The private sector continued to impel the construction activity with 55.2 per cent share or RM17.3 billion of the total value of construction work done, as compared to the public sector with 44.8 per cent share (RM14.0 billion).
